How we make luxury gold jewellery

Every Shilpraj piece is designed, made and hand-finished in our workshop in Surat. We work in 22 karat gold and give each piece the time it needs.

How it is made

From design to delivery

Every piece goes through the same six steps. We do not rush any of them.

  1. Close view of a gold jaali haram pendant with elephant motifs

    Design

Each piece starts with a design: its shape, its size and how it will sit when worn. We create our own designs, and we work just as carefully on a design you bring to us.

  2. Close view of a gold flower and a fringe of tiny gold buds on a choker

    Crafting by hand

Our karigars (skilled craftsmen) shape the gold into beads, fine wirework, cut-out patterns and chains. They build each piece step by step.

  3. A gold pendant set with ruby-red and emerald-green stones, turning slowly

    Setting each stone

Red and green stones, white kundan-style stones and pearl beads are placed one by one. Each stone is set and secured by hand.

  4. Close view of a crescent filigree pendant in matte gold

    The matte finish

Each piece is given a soft matte finish by hand. This shows every carved detail clearly. The gold looks rich and soft, not shiny like a mirror.

  5. Two matte gold kadas with stone flowers ringed by pearls

    Hallmarking

Every piece is tested and hallmarked to the BIS standard for 22 karat gold. Each one has its own six-digit HUID, which anyone can check.

  6. A finished gold collar necklace with an engraved leaf fringe and matching jhumkas

    Final check

Before a piece leaves us, we check it in full light: every link, every stone, every clasp. Then we pack it with care and send it across India or abroad.

Our techniques

The details you can see

These four techniques give our jewellery its own look.

  1. Matte gold bead clusters and bells on a bridal choker
    01

    Matte finish

    Soft, not shiny

A soft matte surface with light shadow in the deeper parts. It shows the carving clearly, and the gold looks warm instead of shiny.

  2. Engraved leaf motifs on a slender gold kada
    02

    Nakshi

    Engraved motifs

Nakshi is the Indian art of carving designs into gold. Leaves, flowers and peacocks are raised and engraved by hand.

  3. White kundan-style stones set in a lattice of gold
    03

    Kundan-style setting

    Stones framed in gold

Stones are set close together in a bed of gold, in the classic kundan style. Each stone sits neatly in its own gold frame.

  4. Pearl-bead strands woven with gold bead chains on a bracelet
    04

    Pearl-bead stringing

    Moti work

Strands of pearl beads are strung together with gold beads. They give necklaces and bracelets a soft, graceful look.

“We take our time with every piece, so that you can wear it with pride.”

Purity you can check

22 parts gold out of 24

Pure gold is 24 karat. Our jewellery is 22 karat: 22 parts gold out of 24, or 91.6 percent. That is why it is marked 916. It is pure enough for a rich gold colour, and strong enough to hold fine detail.

How to read the hallmark

  • BISThe mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards
  • 22K916The purity: 22 karat, 91.6% gold
  • HUIDA six-digit code of letters and numbers, unique to each piece

Check a HUID yourself

  1. 01

Install the free BIS Care app from Google Play or the App Store.

  2. 02

Open it and choose “Verify HUID”.

  3. 03

Enter the six-digit code stamped on the piece.

  4. 04

The app shows the type of jewellery, its purity and the centre that tested it.

If you cannot find the HUID on a piece, please ask us. We will show you where it is.
